With summer now here and you can book that sunshine break or have a well overdue catch up with your family and friends the last thing you want to put a dampener on it is the hangovers the next day.

Some of us are never affected by the dreaded things whilst others are completely ruined the next day. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to ease the discomfort.

The 3 big problems with having too much the night before are inflammation, dehydration and sleep deprivation. Inflammation is caused because the alcohol binds to different chemical enzymes in the body and changes the way we act.
Dehydration because it causes you to urinate a lot and then there is the sleep deprivation because it interrupts your natural sleep cycle, you don’t get the much-needed good night’s rest.

1. Get the H2O into your system:
Drinking water helps to restore the bodies necessary fluids. Alcohol concentrates the blood, which is 70% water, so it really affects the fluid balance. Drinking the necessary water helps the bloodstream and circulatory system carry the much-needed nutrients to your body. The worst thing you can do is go for that “hair of the dog” more booze. It will only make you feel temporarily better because of that euphoric feeling from the night before, so you forget about the hangover temporarily, but you will feel even worse soon after.

Can’t do too much water then reach for the energy drinks.

2. Drinking sports drinks: will rehydrate the body even faster. These drinks are loaded with some minerals called electrolytes – such as magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium – which help regulate fluid levels in the body. They elevate blood glucose and sodium levels leading to a faster rehydration. So, before you go out get some energy drinks at the ready in the fridge.

3. Exercising: is also a very good fast and effective hangover and experts say that exercise works the best as it increases the oxygen flow to the brain and fills you with the great feel good hormones that boost your energy. I do understand if you feel you can’t think about that whilst feeling the need to throw up, but maybe once the energy drink or water has kicked in you could possibly muster the strength for a low to moderate workout.

4. Get the carbs into you:
Alcohol interferes with your blood sugar levels which can be the reason you feel so tired, irritable and all in all like a lead weight. Having some toast or pancakes, something carb packed can help elevate the blood sugars and get you some much needed energy.

5. Try not to mix your drinks too much: Whilst it is great to have the cocktails, if you decide on the cocktails make sure you choose the ones with the same alcohol ingredients, this will aid the cause and allow you not to suffer too much the next day. Its always great to enjoy our summer but remember the weather alone dehydrates us (and that’s just drying our hair before we even get out the door) so have a good amount of water in your system before your evening begins.

Have a very happy August.
