The breathtaking Caves of Canelobre are about 24 kilometres inland from Alicante near Busot and 20 kilometres towards Benidorm on the northern slope of the 700 metres high Cabecó mountain. It is known to be Spain’s largest and deepest cave system. The caves were formed millions of years ago but they are still gradually developing at a rate of just 1cm every 100 years! The stalactites and stalagmites are endlessly growing and assisted by the clever lighting, take on the shapes and forms of all kinds of animals as well as giving the caves a cathedral like feel. Candelabra formation is the main attraction here from which the caves have taken their name.
Cuevas del Canelobre (Candelabra Caves) are famous not only for their natural beauty but also because of the number of concerts and folk festivals conducted here as the cave’s chamber has excellent acoustics.
The caves are open all year and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. It is also advised to take warm clothing as it is cold.
