It is with great sadness that as President of GASP Theatre I have to announce that the final curtain has come down on GASP Theatre.

Throughout the last 9 years we have tried to bring a little bit of ‘culture’ to the people of Gran Alacant but all to no avail. Our last production ‘Just the Ticket’ played to an audience of just 13 people on it’s first night and 42 on the 2nd performance. This after 5 months of hard slog rehearsing, remembering lines and more importantly our moves. But there is nothing worse for a performer that playing to rows and rows of empty seats. I sometimes wonder what it takes to shake people out of their apathy and come and support a bunch of well meaning ‘amateurs’, both English and Spanish, who try to bring a little bit of culture that does not involve booze or football.

I have to thank the local press for their efforts, especially the GA Advertiser who have always given us excellent coverage of the last 9 years, but all to no avail. But what is even more annoying are the well meaning people who ring and book tickets, saying ‘we will collect at the door’ and never turn up.

We have always supported Cruz Roja and made regular donations to them but our next presentation to them of 800€ will unfortunately, have to be our last.

Finally I want to thank all of our loyal patrons who have supported us during the last 9 years.

David Ashley – President GASP Theatre.
